On Saturday, October 15, 2011 SHELTER, Inc. held a party at Temple Isaiah in Lafayette to celebrate its 25th anniversary. Guests arrived to the sounds of Generations in Jazz, a local group of volunteer of jazz musicians, led by former SHELTER, Inc. board president Jim Keefe. A large decorated display greeted people in the registration area, depicting scenarios where the homeless might sleep—in someone’s living room, in an alleyway and on the doorstep of a business. Keynote speaker Steve Lopez shared his personal story of meeting Nathaniel Ayers, a homeless musician living on the streets of Los Angeles. Lopez, a Contra Costa native, is a columnist for the Los Angeles Times who wrote about meeting Ayers in his columns. He eventually turned that series of columns into a book, then movie, called The Soloist.
Guests included SHELTER, Inc. founders, past and current board members, donors, employees, volunteers, faith communities and corporate supporters--bringing the SHELTER, Inc. community together in one place. Thanks to the community, over the past 25 years, SHELTER, Inc. has successfully prevented and ended homelessness for thousands of Contra Costa families, over 175,000 men, women and children.
SHELTER, Inc.—Inspiring People. Changing Lives. Ending Homelessness.
